May Recap & “Studs of the Month”

Well we ended May on a bit of a sour note today with our first four rainouts of the season, but other than that the weather has been amazing after a very long winter, and the baseball was fantastic.

Like the last couple of years offense continues to dominate the league with some very high scoring games. There were 46 home runs in the month of May in 44 games, so roughly 1 per game. Pitchers need to figure it out! We unfortunately also saw 3 games forfeited due to waivers which is tough to see, especially when every game matters so much in the standings. Let’s hope we don’t see anymore.

The White Sox have taken the early pole position courtesy their offense as they lead the league in most offensive categories. There is a lot of baseball left but they look tough thus far. The Dinos meanwhile have not played a single game yet, so with college season now over look to see them at the ballpark a lot in June. Lastly, there is going to be a battle for the final playoff position as the standings look like a bit of a logjam right now.

And now for your Studs of the Month. Just like last year, we have two sponsors Papi Sunglasses, and Calgary Septic and Water, both local businesses. Big thank you to them! The biggest offensive and pitching “studs” will receive a pair of shades  to show off.

Brett Brittany of the White Sox was on fire in May, just as he was last August when he also won Stud of the Month. In 12 games in May he lead the league in 3B (3), HR (4), RBI (18), R (20), & Total Bases (40) while finishing 2nd in 2B (5), all good for a 1.949 OPS: not bad I guess. His highlight game was May 30 vs the Guns in which he had 4 hits including a 2B, a HR and 6 RBI in a 30-19 win.

The White Sox outfield seems pretty good as Jordan Moffat also had himself a solid month of May, leading the league in hits (20) while hitting a crisp .526. His signature game was the same as his teammate Brittany, however Moffat’s could also be called a game of a lifetime, as he helped the White Sox put up 30 runs on May 30 vs the Guns, going a perfect 6-6, with 3 2Bs, 1 HR, 5 Runs, 4 RBIs

The Guns have moved up the standings this season thanks in part to league All-Star Graham Fader. He lit up the scoresheet, leading the league in 3Bs (3) and finishing 2nd in Runs (19), while adding 7 steals as well. His highlight game was the opening game of the season May 2nd in a 9-7 7th inning comeback over the Cardinals when he added 2 2B, scored 3Rs and stole a bag

Another copy and paste job from last August, as we saw Giant ace Steven Latos dice up the league this May with a 0.78 ERA across 18 innings. I think he really likes to collect sunglasses, because he seems to be on this list every month! He picked up a save over the first place White Sox on May 23, then added a signature 7IP CG gem 3 days later over the Longhorns.

Seth Hewitt is a newcomer to the FMBA, but you wouldn’t know it as he lead all pitchers in IP (27), CG (2), Starts (4) and Wins (3) while keeping a 3.89 ERA for the Guns. You could make an argument that his best game was the game the Guns lost in extras where he threw 8 innings, but he proceeded to throw 6IP in with only 74 pitches in his next start over the Longhorns on May 20.

Last but not least is Christian Lapointe of the Wolfpack who had a pretty solid May, leading all pitchers in strikeouts (25), while maintaining a 3.81 ERA. A personal favorite stat of mine as well is the 11 HBP’s he added in, you gotta keep hitters on their toes! His signature game was not a start, but coming in to shut the door against the Diamondbacks this past Saturday May 30, throwing 3IP of 1 hit ball, picking up the W in relief for the Pack.

Congrats to all the May “Studs”, catch you guys in June!
